PURPOSE:To improve the processing speed by dividing a density histogram into two checking histograms such as highlight part and a shadow part and corresponding each histogram to a switching point of a gradation correction tape so as to reduce the memory capacity. CONSTITUTION:The density histogram is generated to the highlight part and the shadow part as the pre-processing of the print processing. As to the histogram of the highlight part, the count is accumulated from the highlight part and as to the histogram of the shadow part, the count is accumulated from the shadow part. When the accumulated value reaches a predetermined accumulation, a shadow point DP and a highlight point HP are decided. A signal representing the DP, HP is outputted from a system control circuit 4 as a control signal to the gradation correction circuit 2, the gradation correction table is switched to apply gradation correction of the data outputted from a picture memory 1.
