1317853 Hydrocarbon conversion catalysts SOC FRANCAISE DES PRODUITS POUR CATALYSE 19 April 1971 [13 April 1970] 26810/71 Heading B1E [Also in Division C5] Solid catalyst comprising (a) zinc compounds, substantially in the form of zinc oxide and zinc phosphate, in an amount (expressed as ZnO) constituting from 0.1 to 4.5 weight per cent of the catalyst, (b) from 1 to 39.9 weight per cent of silica and (c) phosphoric acid in an amount such that the total phosphorus content of the catalyst is from 60 to 70 weight per cent (expressed as P 2 O 5 ) is prepared by a process which comprises mixing zinc oxide and silica, impregnating the resulting mixture with phosphoric acid or a precursor thereof, calcining the impregnated mixture at a temperature of from 200 to 1000‹C and, optionally, contacting the calcined mixture with steam, optionally diluted for example with air, at a temperature of from 100 to 350‹C. In a preferred procedure for preparing the catalyst, zinc oxide is mixed with an aqueous suspension of silica hydrogel microspheres which may have a diameter of from 100 to 800 microns, water is removed from the resulting mixture, the resulting material is shaped, for example by extrusion, and the resulting shapes, which may have a surface area of from 150 to 300 m<SP>2</SP>/g and a pore volume of from 0.8 to 1.4 ml/g, are dried prior to impregnation with a solution of phosphoric acid which may be ortho-, pyro-, meta or poly-phosphoric acid or "super-phosphoric acid" (which is defined as dehydrated phosphoric acid having an enhanced P 2 O 5 content).
