PURPOSE:To industrially and advantageously obtain the titled compound useful as a synthetic raw material for various medicines etc., by affecting a dialkyl malate with an enzyme, microbial cell, etc., having the ability to selectively and asymmetrically hydrolyze ester bond at the alpha-position. CONSTITUTION:A dialkyl malate, e.g. dimethyl malate, etc., is affected with an enzyme, microbial cell, e.g. Cryptococcus laurentii (ATCC 18803 strain), etc., having the ability to selectively and asymmetrically hydrolyze ester bond at the alpha-position or treated materials thereof to provide an optically active beta-monoalkyl malate. Furthermore, the ester group of this compound is amidated to give optically active beta-malamic acid, which is then reacted with an alkali hypohalite to afford optically active isoserine. |
