Grand piano or piano, the mechanism of which has a large number of adjacently arranged hammers for activating the individual sound strings as well as a synthesiser and an arrangement for suppressing the acoustic piano sound, to which end, in the region of movement of all the hammer shafts, a register is arranged, which runs perpendicularly to their plane of movement and can be displaced from an ineffective position which does not impede the hammer movement into a position for intercepting the hammer movement before striking the sound string.
