Process for removing thallium from crude lead and high-purity lead

A process is described for the removal of thallium from crude lead and high-purity lead by adding metal chlorides and/or chlorine gas, wherein the removal of thallium is carried out in several stages at temperatures between 350 and 450 DEG C while applying a small total excess of metal chlorides and/or chlorine gas, relative to the thallium content, and the molten metal is freed of the resulting thallium-containing chlorine metals after each stage.
