In the case of cables which are laid indoors, the insulating materials which are used are intended to be largely flame resistant. The optimum insulating materials for the cores of electrical and optical cables are, however, not flame resistant or are only inadequately flame resistant. According to the invention, the cores of a cable which are insulated in such a manner are embedded in a flame resistant, paste-like filling compound. The cable core assembly prepared in this way is surrounded by an outer sheath made of a flame-resistant material.
