A panel of transmission liquid crystal elements (2) are supported in front of a plate (9) made of transparent material. The plate has a series of small shutters between its major surfaces. The shutters are made of opaque material, and lie parallel to each other, and at right angles to the display panel. - In day-time use, light is transmitted through the plate (9) in order to illuminate the display panel by transmission. During night time use, light (40) from a lamp (8) in the base of the display stand is reflected from the plate in order to illuminate the panel.
