PURPOSE:To offer a high-reliability, long-life simple length inspecting instrument by arranging a couple of photoelectric switches at the permissible upper- and lower-limit positions of an end surface of a body to be measured and bringing a measuring element which has a higher light reflection factor than the end surface of the body to be measured into contact with the end surface of the body to be measured. CONSTITUTION:The measuring element 2 is pressed against the top surface of the body 3 to be measured from above by a hydraulic cylinder 1. The length (l) of the measuring element 2 is set larger than the permissible width (x) of the body 3 to be measured and its measuring surface is formed having the higher light reflection factor than the measured surface of the body 3 to be measured. The couple of photoelectric switches 4 and 5 are arranged at the permissible upper- and lower-limit positions of the body 3 to be measured. When the length of the body 3 to be measured is within the permissible range, the photoelectric switch 4 is OFF and the photoelectric switch 5 is ON; when the length is short, both switches 4 and 5 are OFF. Further, when the length is long, both switches 4 and 5 are OFF. This inspection result is displayed on OK and NG pilot lamps 7 and 8 of a decision device 6.
