PURPOSE:To facilitate the monitoring of an optical output and the decision of the directional properties, angle of spread, etc., of optical beams by mounting a plurality of photodetectors in one beam outgoing region of a laser and fitting electrodes separately extracting each output signal from the photodetectors. CONSTITUTION:A monitor element 3 with a semiconductor 2 and four light- receiving sections is formed onto an N-type GaAs substrate 1 in a monolithic manner. The electrodes 4 extracting signals are shaped to respective photodetector 3. The laser 2 is used under the state of a forward bias and the photodetector 3 under the state of a reverse bias. Accordingly, the deformation, etc. of a luminous radiation pattern based on the optical output of outgoing laser beams, the angle of spread of beams and the instability of the laser can easily be detected.
