In this drive apparatus, a slide (2) movably arranged in a longitudinal guide (1) is displaceable via a steel band (3). The extremities (4) of the steel band (3) are firmly mounted on a drive roller (5), as a result of which one end of the steel band (3) is wound spirally and the other end is unwound spirally during rotation of the drive roller (5). In this way, the slide (2) fastened to the steel band (3) and the tool attached to the slide (2) are carried along free of play so that quick and precise positioning is ensured. <IMAGE>
