PURPOSE:To automatically and variably set not only the shape of an article to be painted but also the color and coating quantity of paint, by allowing a painting gun to preliminarily make arrangements by inputting the data corresponding to the kind of the article to be painted during a time when said article moves from a predetermined hanging place to the painting gun. CONSTITUTION:When several kinds of panels P1-Pn respectively having different shapes are set as articles to be painted, at each time when the kind of the panel P fed in a suspended state changes, the point of time when the panel P is fed in the suspended state and article data such as an article code, an article name, a paint name and a paint emitting amount are inputted to an input apparatus 9. Subsequently, the shape of the panel P is detected by a shape detector 3 and this detection data is inputted to a controller 6 along with a painting gun height signal by a height detector 5. The controller 6 holds both signals until the panel P reaches the stand-by position of a painting gun 2 and, subsequently, a paint supply valve 7 supplying paint to the painting gun 2 is controlled on the basis of said data and the signal to automatically perform painting of the panel.
