PURPOSE:To obtain high-purity hemin at a low cost, by hemolyzing erythrocytes, denaturing and precipitating hemoglobin, adjusting the pH, forming hemin- containing precipitates and extracting the precipitates with an acidic organic solvent. CONSTITUTION:Hemin is produced from erythrocytes. In the process, ery throcytes are hemolyzed and the pH of the resultant hemolyzed solution is adjusted to <=6.5 or >=12 to denature hemoglobin. The pH of the above- mentioned hemolyzed solution is adjusted to 7-8 to form hemin-containing precipitates, which are then separated and extracted with an acidic organic solvent, e.g. methanol or acetone, to dissolve the hemin. Precipitates insoluble in the organic solvent, e.g. protein, etc., are removed and acetic acid is added to distil away the organic solvent and recover the hemin. A small amount of the organic solvent used is sufficient, and the solvent distilled away without containing water therein can be reused.
