Air is fed to compartments by a longitudinal two-part duct running the full length of the car. The primary part (3) of this duct carrying hot or cold air is of L-shaped cross-section with the hot air carrying secondary part (4) lying in the corner recess of the primary L-shape. In each compartment, an air diffuser (5) is connected to the duct sections (3 and 4). A mixing chamber (21) is connected directly and permanently with the primary duct (3) and with the secondary duct (4) with an electromagnet (13) actuating the obturator (41). Ambient air from the compartment also enters the mixing chamber (21) through the front vents (45) and mixed air exits into the compartment via the top grille (9). A control unit is arranged to control the electromagnet (13) in a variable duty cycle to vary correspondingly the quantity of hot air taken from the secondary duct (4).
