摘要 PURPOSE:To obtain a device which is high in contrast and fast in display response speed even in case of using a high-degree time-division driving system by specifying the angle of torsion of liquid crystal molecules of a liquid crystal composite body arranged between a couple of substrates by spontaneous torsion pitch and control torsion pitch and also specifying the angle of a director angle. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal display is constituted by arranging the liquid crystal composite body which satisfies the relation k33/k22>=2.5 between an elastic coefficient k22 in a torsional direction and an elastic coefficient k33 in a bending direction between the couple of substrates 1 and 2 which have oriented layers respectively, and the angle alpha of torsion of liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal composite body arranged between the couple of substrates is 250-450 deg.. Then, the relation (Pc-Ps)/Pc<0 between the spontaneous torsion pitch Ps of liquid crystal molecules and the control torsion pitch Pc of liquid crystal molecules when the array of the liquid crystal molecules is controlled forcibly by the orientation layers is satisfied, and the angles between the surfaces of the couple of substrates and the director direction of liquid crystal molecules contacting the surfaces are both 10-25 deg..
