The device of the invention comprises a frame with ground-bearing means in the forms of skis 6, 7 and means of automatic fastening to the lifting system of a tractor. It carries a first axle 13 in a vertical longitudinal plane, and a means for pivoting said first axle in this plane between a vertical position and a horizontal position, in which it is then directed rearwards. Mounted rotatably on the axle 13 is a plate 16 comprising bale-gripping means 17. The first axle 13 pivots about a second horizontal axle 9, in relation to which it is offset slightly rearwards. The pivoting towards the position in which the axle 13 is vertical takes place by means of a single-acting jack 15. <IMAGE>
