PURPOSE:To attain the high speed shutter operation by discharging an electric charge stored in an image pickup element when a shutter means is opened and extracting the electric charge stored in the image pickup element afterward as a signal so as to decide an actual exposure time independently of the performance of a shutter circuit. CONSTITUTION:The shutter circuit is opened in synchronism with a V-BLK signal in the drive timing of the image pickup element controlled by a drive control circuit 108 and two photodetection section charge moving pulses are generated between the signals B-BLK. The electric charge of the photodetection section stored before the 1st time T1 is transferred to a V transfer stage by the pulse at the 1st time T1. All electric charges are discharged by the high speed sweepout drive between times T1 and T2 at the V transfer stage. The electric charge of the photodetection section stored between times T1 and T2 is transferred to the V transfer stage by the pulse at the 2nd time T2 and extracted by an image pickup element as a video signal. The signal controlled by a drive control circuit and extracted by the image pickup element is a still picture signal exposed between the times T1 and T2 in this way and the time interval between the times T1 and T2 is an actual shutter time, then the high speed shutter operation is attained.
