PURPOSE:To obtain a composite wire having a uniform vapor-deposited metallic layer by feeding a core material along the central axis of a crucible as a metal evaporating source having a shape defined by two lines which are similar to the external shape of the cross-section of the core material and by carrying out vapor deposition. CONSTITUTION:A crucible 1 having an opening 9 defined by two lines which are similar to the external shape of the cross-section of a core material 4, e.g., a ring-shaped crucible is prepd. as a metal evaporating source. The core material 4 is fed to the position of the opening 9 along the central axis of the crucible 1 and a metal 2 in the crucible 1 is heated. While metallic vapor 3 is generated, the core material 4 is moved upward at a constant speed to deposit the vapor 3 on the core material 4. Thus, a composite wire 5 is obtd.
