PURPOSE:To obtain the titled device lessening an influence of a difference in grade on an orientation, thereby having a less tendency for generating a bad orientation by burying the electrode in the supporting part of the electrode resulted in lessening the difference in grade between an electrode and a supporting part of the electrode. CONSTITUTION:The glass 1 for a substrate is coated with a resist except a part provided with the electrode followed by etching it with an aqueous solution contg. 2% fluoric acid and 8% glycerin to form a cavity having 1,500Angstrom depth. And then, the obtd. substrate is attached ITO thereon in 1,500Angstrom thickness followed by peeling the resist from the substrate to form the electrode. Thus, the difference in grade between the electrode on the substrate and the supporting part of the electrode becomes very small distance of 50Angstrom . When a cell is assembled using the obtd. substrate, without attaching the orientation film on the substrate by means of an ordinary method, and a smectic liquid crystal is inserted in the cell, followed by orientating it with a temperature gradient method, the titled liquid crystal device which hardly recognizes the disorder of the orientation due to the difference in grade is obtd.
