To determine a hapten on the competitive heterogeneous immunoassay principle, the hapten-containing sample is incubated with defined amounts of a) labelled anti-hapten antibody (antibody conjugate) and b) a hapten conjugate which consists of one or more hapten molecules bound to a carrier which is capable of specific binding and c) with a binding partner, which is present in an insoluble phase, for the carrier present in the hapten conjugate, the liquid and the solid phases are separated, and the label in one of the phases is measured.
