Vertical adjustment device for a safety belt having a slideway element and a sliding element, the upper belt deflection fitting being pivotably fastened to the sliding element, the slideway element taking the form of a sliding rail composed of a flat steel bar and the sliding element taking the form of a sliding sleeve, the sliding rail having two flat sides and two narrow sides, and the narrow side supporting at least one tooth which is bent out of the plane of the flat steel bar, and the sliding sleeve having a cutout which matches the tooth and extends approximately from the longitudinal centre of an end wall into the floor, and a compression spring being arranged between the floor of the sliding sleeve and the flat side of the sliding rail.
