An illumination device is described having a light source which can be switched on and off automatically, especially for television sets. The illumination device consists of an electronic switching apparatus having a light source (3) connected to it. The electronic switching apparatus uses an optoelectronic element (6) which is arranged on the light source (3) such that it can rotate to record the room brightness when the television set (1) is switched on, and automatically controls the light intensity of the light source (3) by means of a control device having a brightness regulator (12). <IMAGE>
