The invention relates to a process for the high-temperature treatment of an aqueous suspension containing clay in the form of a stable dispersion resulting from a complete splitting, this suspension furthermore possibly containing a dispersed organic phase, in order to obtain a filterable product. In this process, the suspension to be treated is brought to a temperature lying between 150 and 260 DEG C in a pressurised reactor, and milk of lime is injected into the reactor at a rate of 60 to 400 g of CaO per kg of clay contained in the suspension to be treated, at a temperature equal to at least 150 DEG C. The process applies typically to aqueous clay suspensions with a clay content lying between 15 and 35 % by weight.
