PURPOSE:To attain positive profile emphasis by calculating the difference between the sets of diagonal elements to a picture element pattern having a picture interval in vertical and horizontal directions of an original image, discriminating the polarity and applying primary differentiation selecting a proper operating picture element. CONSTITUTION:A 2X2 picture element pattern shown in figure 1 whose profile is emphasized is obtained by profile extraction by means of a primary differentiation filter 2 from a 2X2 picture element pattern shown in figure 3 in n-picture element interval horizontally and m-picture element interval vertically in an original image is obtained. Picture elements (b)-(d) are decided to a reference picture element (a) and operation is applied to the picture elements (a)-(d), and a profile A is obtained. Then a constant is multiplied with the profile A to adjust the added value used for the profile emphasis. The polarity of the profile A id discriminated, and when it is possible, it is fed to the reference picture element (a) and when negative, its absolute value is added respectively to the picture element (d). In order to obtain the total image, the reference picture element (a) is scanned from the beginning of the image data to the end to apply the similar processing. Thus, a very proper profile emphasized image without any position deviation is obtained.
