A microphone (10) has unique polar response characteristics and improves the problem of off-axis symmetry of cardioid and cardioid family microphones when the sound source can be accurately placed on a particular side of the microphone. The microphone (10) has a virtual axis of a maximum pickup sensitivity which is angularly displaced from the physical longitudinal axis. The microphone (10) has a diaphragm (65) which has a front side and a rear side. Forward and rearward movement of the diaphragm (65) is sensed by a sensing element (61) mounted in spaced relationship to the rear side of the diaphragm (65). A cavity (80) is formed between the diaphragm (65) and the sensing element (61). The cavity (80) is substantially enclosed, with a non-symmetrical arrangement of at least one aperture (63) for permitting sound pressure waves to enter the substantially enclosed cavity (80), so that the polar response curve of the microphone (10) in a horizontal plane is angularly displaced about a line perpendicular to the microphone's horizontal longitudinal axis.
|
