A portable and an industrial surface cleaning appliance for removing dust from fixed objects, in particular for precleaning car bodies before painting, comprises a built-in blasting-air nozzle (1) with a blasting slot (2), which emits a flat laminar air jet at an appropriate speed, appropriate pressure and with a short range. An ionisation device (7) in operative connection with the blasting nozzle serves for neutralising electrostatically charged dust particles and a suction nozzle (3) with a suction slot (4) is arranged at an appropriate distance from the blasting slot (2) in order to suck away the air jet after flowing over the surface to be cleaned. A flat brush (5), which is arranged next to the suction slot (4), serves as a chicane, determines the distance of the appliance from the surface to be cleaned and laterally bounds a gap enclosing the laminar air jet. <IMAGE>
