PURPOSE:To grasp the medium information written into the area before a tape beginning end marker before the start of business and to make smooth business processing possible by updating the medium information depending on the change in the contents at tape unloading. CONSTITUTION:The information such as tape number is stored at an area before the tape beginning end marker in the register of a medium information control circuit 7. A circuit 7 updates the number of times of the passage by the passage of the beginning end marker. The number of times of write and read errors during the processing operation is counted at the circuit 7 and the contents of the register are updated when the count value exceeds the register content. The content of the register is passed through a data converting circuit at the time of the tape unloading for updating the medium information of the magnetic tape. Thus the various information can be known before the start of the business and the tape having many reading errors is previously exchanged to make the business processing more smooth.
