A brake valve, which prevents the hydraulic drive driven by the load from running with accelerated speed during negative load, has a control piston which together with a control edge on the housing side determines the choke cross-section for the displaced working medium. The control piston is additionally provided with a valve cone for sealing off against the leakage of oil in the closed position. The brake valve has a very simple construction and permits a frictional, cavitation-free braking action. <IMAGE>
