This internal combustion engine which works in particular as a diesel engine comprises at least one cylinder and a piston which together with the cylinder delimits the combustion chamber, as well as an intake and exhaust valve arrangement, with the intake and exhaust valves being controlled in such a way that the combustion chamber undergoes consecutively and cyclically a compression phase, a working phase and a gas exchange phase. The gas exchange phase begins during the same piston stroke following the working phase. The exhaust valve is again closed before the end of the piston stroke which includes the working phase, whereas the intake valve continues to be open beyond the conclusion of the exhaust for this same piston stroke. In this way a complete combustion cycle can be carried through during a complete stroke including the back-and-forth movement of the piston, and at the same time a fresh charge can be sucked into the combustion chamber.
