PURPOSE:To obtain a data to read a signal over a wide contrast range with high resolution by providing a means changing read condition and reading at least a part of an original duplicatedly. CONSTITUTION:The means is provided, which changes the read condition and reads duplicatedly at lest at a part of an original. For example, a processing section 13 consists of an amplifier 9, an A/D converter 10, a line memory (stor ing one scanning line's content) 11 or a frame memory (storing one pattern's content) 11, and an operating section 12 and an output from the processing section 13 is used as a new image data. The original 1 is moved to a reader relatively in a direction (a) or its opposite direction while being subject to main scanning and then subject to subscanning. Further, the read condition is changed by using a lighting control means 3, a filter drive means 5 or a photodetector control means 8 so as to control a prescribed part.
