940,174. Polymerizing butadiene. LABORATORI RIUNITE STUDI E RICERCHE S.p.A. Jan. 11, 1962 [Jan. 12, 1961], No. 1090/62. Heading C3P. Polybutadiene in which the 1.4-cis isomer predominates is made by polymerizing monomeric butadiene under substantially anhydrous conditions in the presence of a ternary catalytic system obtained from (a) a simple hydride of a metal of Group I, II, or III of the Mendeleeff Periodic Table or a complex hydride of the formula M Al H 4 where M is lithium, sodium or potassium, (b) an organometallic iodide of a metal of Group II or III of the Periodic Table, and (c) a tetravalent salt of titanium. The reaction may be effected in an inert hydrocarbon solvent, and the catalyst may be preformed. Component (a) of the catalyst may be lithium hydride, sodium hydride, magnesium hydride, calcium hydride, or aluminium hydride, or lithium aluminium hydride. Component (b) may be the mono-, di- and sesqui-iodides of alkyls, aryls, and alkaryls of the metals Al, Ga, In, Tl, and B, and the mono-iodides of the alkyls, aryls, or alkaryls of Mg, Be, Zn, and Cd. The exemplified (b) components is di-ethyl aluminium mono-iodide. The (c) component is preferably titanium tetrachloride. |
