PURPOSE:To obtain the titled yarn having improved separating properties while preventing fiber-to-fiber fusing in infusible treatment and carbonization processes, by making infusible pitch yarn provided with a dimethylpolysiloxane having a specific viscosity, removing the compound, and carbonizing it. CONSTITUTION:Firstly, carbonaceous pitch is subjected to melt spinning to give pitch yarn, which is provided with a dimethylpolysiloxane having 0.5-500cst viscosity at 25 deg.C as a finishing oil for infusible treatment, and the yarn is subjected to infusible treatment usually in an oxidizing atmosphere. Then, the finishing oil for infusible treatment is removed preferably by cleaning with an organic solvent such as benzene, etc., the infusible yarn is carbonized generally in an inert gas atmosphere, or further graphitized, to give the aimed yarn. The infusible treatment is preferable carried out at 200-350 deg.C.
