PURPOSE:To reproduce a color impression of a display picture faithfully by equalizing gradient of clearness and brightness using a signal converting circuit between a color display picture and a color hard copy. CONSTITUTION:Along with that quantized input picture signals B, G and R are put into subtractors 11 (11B, 11G and 11R), they are also put into a maximum input discriminating circuit 12 where maximum input value X0 are discriminated. Those discriminated X0 are put into subtractors 11 (11B, 11G and 11R) where each X0 is subtracted from each input signal B, G and R. Subtracted signals B-X0, G-X0 and R-X0 are put into density setting devices 13 (13B, 13G and 13R) where those signals are multiplied by factors FB, FG and FR. Multiplied signals are put into adders 14 (14B, 14G and 14R) along with maximum input value X0 where both are added and then produce converted output signals B', G' and R'. Thus color converting signals B', G' and R' which are satisfied with a conditional formula meeting the stated purpose can be obtained.
