[Also in Divisions H1 and H4] In a method of recording items of information a thin surface layer supported by a recording carrier is permanently structurally altered by a laser beam or beams incident thereon which beam is modulated in relation to the information to be recorded. The thin surface layer may comprise vapour-deposited metal or a layer of insulating material. As shown, a recording medium A consists of transparent plastics film T carrying a vacuum-deposited cadmium or zinc metal layer O which is melted or vaporized at the focal point B of light beams transmitted from a laser L. A Kerr cell K controls the intensity of light in dependence upon the brightness of the image point to be recorded, as measured by a photo electric cell P. A rotary mirror S deflects light beams on to the recording medium A which may be movable. Alternatively the laser beam may be conducted through a double refracting crystal, the index of refraction of which is varied by employing an electrical or magnetic field. The recording medium may be used to record television pictures or the results of electronic calculating machines. |
