PURPOSE:In the presence of a solid acid-base catalyst, the addition reaction between a specific solefin and maleic anhydride to enable high-yield production of the titled compound of high quality at lower temperatures with inhibition of the formation of high-molecular-weight by-products, caused by decomposition or polycondensation. CONSTITUTION:In the presence of an solid acid-base catalyst, e.g., 1-olefin, an inner olefin which is obtained by isomerization, isobytylene or isopropylene oligomers is allowed to react with maleic anhydride at 150-200 deg.C for 2-15hrs to give the objective compound. As the solid acid-base catalyst, is cited silica, titania, silica-alumina, silica-titania-alumina, silica-titania-iron oxide, silica- alumina-magnesia. EFFECT:It does not cause problems on discoloration, viscosity increase of the reaction product and the reactor cleaning, thus operability is improved with industrial advantage. USE:Neutral sizing agent for paper.
