PURPOSE:To improve the efficiency of retransmission processing and reliability of a card reader by discriminating an error card on the basis of a lamp display or the like. CONSTITUTION:At the stack reading, a card weight 22 is lifted and collected cards 21 are set up on a hopper 30, and at the reading of one card, the card 22 is inserted between the weight 22 and a traveling plate 20. The traveling card 21 is detected by detectors 25, 28 and respective detecting signals (e), (f) are sent to a reading control circuit 2 to detect a trouble at the time of card traveling. When a traveling error due to mispicking, jam, or the like discriminated by the circuit 2, misdischarge to a stacker 29, the detecting of an undifined code, a defective card, or a transfer data error detected by a control device 31 is generated, the device outputs an error signal l to the circuit 2 to actuate a buzzer 3. The circuit 2 outputs an error display signal (h), and if an error card is located on a position where the card can be taken out from the hopper 30, turns on and off a display lamp 4. If the error card is located on a position where the card can be taken out from the stacker 29, the lamp 4 is turned on.
