PURPOSE:To obtain the titled apparatus having a long life time and to obviate a generation of an unremovable stain after a washing treatment by applying the electrochromic solution (EC solution) contg. cyclodextrin (CD) in an aqueous solution of a viologen compd. CONSTITUTION:The titled apparatus is prepared by incorporating the alpha, beta, gammaand delta cyclodextrin having 6-9 numbers of glucopyranose rings to the aqueous solution of the alkylviologen compd. shown by the formula wherein (n) in 1, 2, 6 and 7, X is Br, Cl, I or ClO4, and further by applying K or Na salt of Fe(CN)<4->6 of an auxiliary oxidation-reduction system, and an electrolyte of hypophosphite such as NaH2PO2 and KH2PO2 or KBr and KCl to the titled apparatus. The EC display apparatus having the above described characteristics and capable of a blue color display is obtd. by adding two or more times of CD on the weight basis of the viologen compd. If two or less than times of CD are used, a reddish violet color is displayed.
