PURPOSE:To obtain a high grade output by executing an inhibited rule processing, and thereafter, executing a line length correction of each line by leaving suitably a space between a character and a character, at every character. CONSTITUTION:When a document is being prepared, a character code is stored in a text memory TM, and simultaneously, a character width and a space between characters are stored in a format memory FM. To the document which has been prepared in this way, an inhibited rule processing is performed by an inhibited rule command. That is to say, a character which must not come to the line head of a closed parenthesis, a punctuation mark, etc., and a character which must not come to the line end of an open parenthesis, etc. are justified to the previous line or justified to the following line, and the balance of a character string is maintained thereby. Subsequently, a line length correcting routine is started, and a line length correction is executed in accordance with natural line length, line length, natural length space, contraction allowable rate, and expansion allowable rate.
