A system for controlling displacement of a probe 28 engaging the surface of a clay model 20 comprises three servomotors 34, 38, 44, to drive the probe along X, Y, Z co-ordinate axes, an operator in use controlling probe displacement along any two of the three axes whilst displacement along the third is controlled by signals from a differential transformer (186) Fig. 11 (not shown) carried by the probe. The servo control loops for each axis are as shown in Fig. 14 and include coarse and fine controls, the former utilizing velocity damping from a tachogenerator 210 and the latter position error control with synchros 214, 216. The probe is as described in Specification 1,178,817 (Division G1). Voltages representing co-ordinates of displacement are fed from position digitizors 36, 40, 48 for use in preparing control tapes. |
