After leaving the mould of a continuous casting machine a slab C is supported and cooled in a guide roll assembly. The assembly comprises two spaced columns 18 with two box frames 17 hinged to the columns so they may be swung away from the slab path (as shown in the broken lines) for maintenance. Rollers 21, provided with back-up rollers 23, engage the broad face of the casting. The casting is cooled by spray nozzles 45, 46. The nozzles 45 are mounted on a manifold 44 which can be retracted from the casting on guides (not shown) on a nozzle supporting frame 41. The nozzlesupporting frames 41 are pivotable about axes 42. In order to facilitate adjustment of the casting rolls, the box frames are provided with an eccentric pivot (Fig. 7) comprising a cylindrical shaft 28a which on rotation about a bolt (shown in cross-hatched lines) varies the position of the pivoting axis. Projections 33 engage lugs 32 to ensure correct alignment of the column and box frame. A bolt 39 in a socket 40 adds extra rigidity to the assembly when in use. The ends of the box frames opposed to the hinged ends carry latch yokes 29 which engage slots 30 in the columns and are secured to the columns by wedges 34 movable on bolts 35.</p> |
