PURPOSE:To prevent the malfunction in detecting the terminal end of a magnetic tape by the effect of the light reflected from the surface of the magnetic layer of a thin metallic film type magnetic tape by forming said magnetic layer so as to have the reflectivity on the front side of a specific value or below with respect to the vertical received light by the diffusive illumination of a specific wavelength. CONSTITUTION:The thin metallic film 2 consisting of CoCr, CoNi, CoNi-P, etc. is formed by a method such as sputtering method on a substrate 1 consisting of PP, polyamide, etc. A layer consisting of a sulfide is formed on the surface of the layer 2 by introduction, etc. of gaseous O2 and gaseous SO2 after the vapor deposition of the layer 2. A surface treatment layer 3 consisting of an oxide, nitride, chloride, etc. is otherwise formed thereon by using a reactive gas such as NO, NO2 or Cl2. The layer 3 is otherwise formed thereon by plasma irradiation, plasma polymn. method, etc. The reflectivity on the surface in the stage of detecting the vertical light under the diffusive illumination of 600nm wavelength is made <=50% in the above-mentioned way, by which the malfunction in the detection of the terminal end of the magnetic tape is prevented. |
