Polyester having high thermal resistance is prepared by addition reaction of compd. (I) or (II) in the mole ratio of 10-6-10-2 to carbonic acid in the polymerization of terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol where: R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6 = C1 - C10 linear or branched aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbvon; a ,b, c, d, e, f = 1 - 10, integer; X = Br, Cl or CH3; l, m, n, p, q = 1 - 4, integer; and A = alkyl, sulfone, or ester gp.
