The basic idea behind this object is to print the first letters of natural written and spoken syllables of printed lettering in bold, so that the syllables of a word are optically separated and, because they are short and are easily taken in by the eye, can be read from all directions, i.e. from overhead as well, by taking one syllable at a time to form words. To extend and improve the basic idea, long syllables and syllables with groups of letters such as ''sch'' or double letters where syllables are split, such as ''pp'', etc. can also be printed in bold, if this makes the word clearer and more easily readable from all sides. The final choice of the way in which syllables are to be optically split should be left to the expert, however. The ''typeface which is readable from all sides'' is well suited for town and country maps etc., as in such aids to orientation, it is advantageous for the designations to be readable from all sides, e.g. in the allocated position of use. It is well suited inter alia for designating north-south streets on towns, as then all street designations can be read from the lower edge of the plan, and from all other sides as well. In route network plans, vertical typeface having the ... Original abstract incomplete.
