The subject of the invention is a device for the simultaneous and automatic closing of air inlet flaps and of the smoke duct of a fireplace with an open fire. A fireplace according to the invention is of the type comprising an open hearth and casing 11 situated under the horizontal plate 12 and behind the vertical plate 13 of the hearth in which fresh air circulates. The casing 11 communicates, via an opening equipped with a flap 4, with a space included between two walls of a metal hood 10, then it is sucked in hot via openings 21 which emerge into the room and it goes back into the hearth. The hood 10 comprises a closure flap 1. The movements of the two flaps 1 and 4 are slaved by levers 3, 5 and by rods 7 so that they open and close simultaneously. One application is the fitting-out of new or existing fireplaces. <IMAGE>
