The tampon for hygienic use comprises a cylindrical body of moisture-absorbent material such as wadding. On the outside is a layer of water-repellent material permeable to moisture, pref. viscose and of non-woven material. There can be grooves in the outside surface, the water repellent material being folded inwards at them. Thus on absorption of moisture swelling of the absorbent material is not hingered. - A strip of absorbent material and one of repellent material can be wound together into a cylindrical body and pressed.
