PURPOSE:To enable sharp reduction in a cost, by a method wherein an electrode consists of a cylinder tube and a piston rod, and displacement of the rod is detected through detection of electrostatic capacity between the electrodes. CONSTITUTION:In order to electrically insulate a cylinder tube 21 from a piston rod 24, an insulating ring 23a is engaged with the outer peripheral surface of a piston 23 and a slide ring 23b with the outer peripheral surface thereof. Further, an insulating ring 26a is engaged with the inner peripheral surface of a rod guide 26, and a slide ring 26b with the inner peripheral surface thereof. With the cylinder tube 21 and the piston rod 24 served as the electrode of a capacitor, the electrostatic capacity of the capacitor is detected, and this detects the displacement size of the piston rod 24 from the cylinder tube 21.
