PURPOSE:To provide an austenitic stainless steel having excellent sea water resistance and excellent mechanical properties at a cryogenic temp. by consisting the same of specifically composed C, Mn, Al, Si, V, Nb, N and Fe. CONSTITUTION:The austenitic stainless steel consists of <=0.4% C or 0.8-1.0% C, 18-35% Mn, 4-19% Al, <=2.5% Si, 0.05-0.5% V, 0.01-0.2% Nb, 70- 150ppm N and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities. Said steel has excellent sea water resistance, excellent mechanical properties such as strength and toughness even at the cryolgenic temp. and a small coefft. of thermal expansion. Costly and strategical elements such as Ni and Cr are not used. The corrosion resistance is low at 0.4-0.8% C among the above-mentioned compsn. components and the elongation decreases at >1.0% C. The extremely high corrosion resistance and substantial elongation are exhibited within the above-mentioned range.
