PURPOSE:To reinforce the connected part of an optical fiber with excellent adhesivity and water-resistant adhesivity, by grafting an olefin polymer having epoxy group with a silane compound having unsaturated double bond, and adding the obtained graft-modified polymer to a hot-melt adhesive for the reinforcement. CONSTITUTION:The connected part of a welded and connected optical fiber is covered with a tube made of a hot-melt adhesive, and a thin rigid rod is applied longitudinally to the tube. The whole assembly is covered with a heat-shrinkable tube, and heated and integrated to achieve the reinforcement of the connected part. In the above process, an olefin polymer having epoxy group (e.g. ethylene- glycidyl methacrylate copolymer) and grafted with a silane compound having unsaturated double bond (e.g. gamma-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane) is added to the hot-melt adhesive. The amount of grafted silane is about 0.2-4pts.wt. A reinforcement durable for a long period can be achieved by this process. |
