Process for preparing tri(cyclopentadienyl)cerium as well as mono-di(cyclopentadienyl)-cerium intermediates, characterized in that it comprises the reaction of an alkaly metal cyclopentadienyl complex with ceric ammonium nitrate, in solution in an inert organic solvent, so as to obtain tri(cyclopentadienyl)cerium or to form according to the addition order of the reagents, successively and by steps, the dinitrate of mono(cyclopentadienyl)cerium, the mononitrate of di(cyclopentadienyl)cerium and the tri(cyclopentadienyl)cerium.
