<p>PURPOSE:To improve the response property and contrast of a liq. crystal element having a voltage applying means, orientation controlling layers and a ferroelectric liq. crystal layer by using a polyimide type polymer having specified structural units as the material of the orientation controlling layers. CONSTITUTION:The orientation controlling layer 4 made of the polyimide type polymer having structural units represented by formula I (where R is a bivalent group represented by formulas II, III, IV or V) is formed on each glass substrate 2 having a transparent electrode 3 on one side. The polyimide type polymer is obtd. by condensing dicarboxylic acid anhydride represented by formula VI with diamine such as p-phenylenediamine and subjecting synthesized polyamic acid to dehydration and ring closure. Two substrates 2, 2 are placed so that the orientation controlling layers confront with each other, and a ferroelectric liq. crystal 1 such as a compound represented by formula VII is injected into the space between the substrates to obtain the desired ferroelectric liq. crystal element.</p> |
