PURPOSE:To set the feature value of a material automatically and unequivocally by detecting the correlation between an equitone thermal image information and an equitone visual ray image information of the material, and adopting the equitone thermal image information in the combination under the good correlation as the feature value of the material. CONSTITUTION:An infrared ray camera 1 picks up the image of the material 2, and forms plural equitone thermal image information being binary information by the equitone thermal image forming means 3. A visual ray camera 4 picks up the image of the material 2 under almost equal state as that of the camera 1, and forms plural equitone visual ray image information by an equitone visual ray image making means 5. Here, the equitone visual ray image information means the binary image information by the visual ray camera. A correlation calculating means 6 detects the correlation between plural equitone thermal image information and plural equitone visual ray image information. A feature value setting means 7 stores the equitone thermal image information corresponding to max. correlation detected by the means 6 into a feature value storing memory 8 as the feature value of the material 2.
